I am surrounded by moms who are nursing their small businesses to life. Yes, I am talking about you, my dear blogger friends, photographers, network marketers, virtual assistants, and everyone else. We spend hours in our pajamas running our businesses from home: answering emails, making phone calls, and collecting orders. We do it at the kitchen table or the bathroom, on a smartphone or the laptop, but I am here to tell you – you need an office!
We all have heard the statistics – many businesses fail in their first years, but that is not stopping us – we mean business! Well, any company needs working space, working hours, and a business card, and I bet you have the last one.
If I am not convincing enough, here are a ten more reasons why you need a dedicated working space
[bctt tweet=”10 Reasons Why You Need a Dedicated Workspace”]
- A dedicated workspace is what separates a business from a hobby. Your husband might be playing solitaire in his cubical, but he still calls it going to work.
- You can now say: I am going to work and mean it. Set your business hours and hang them in your office – stick to it.
- Save your back from a backache and get yourself an office chair. A good chair will make you look forward to sitting on it and save lots of time on doctor’s appointments.
- Being in the office environment means you distance yourself from the temptations of guilty snack and home chore distractions.
- You can increase your productivity by keeping office stuff in the office. You might also consider disabling Candy Crash on your “office” computer.
- Leave the office behind when it’s your time to spend time with the family. Your family is important – be 100% there, while spending time with your loved ones. Teach your kids about the importance of separating work from personal life.
- Say no to multitasking. Recent research shows that multitasking means not giving 100% to either project you are working on. Have it your all – one project at a time!
- Hire interns – your kids might enjoy interning in your office. Keep your children busy and let them help you run your business 10 minutes a day for younger children or more if they are older.
- The Proper workspace will help you keep things organized instead of all over the house. That would also slightly decrease the house cleaning.
- Did you know that a dedicated for office room in your house is tax deductible? That is like free money you won’t get otherwise.
When it comes to a home office, what do yo think is the most important part of it?
Amy Desrosiers says
I do love have a dedicated workspace in my home. I just need to come up with a dedicated cleaner to organize it!
Jeanette says
I agree there needs to be a decimated work space. I have a desk with my computer and my files and no one touches it. If anyone does anything by my desk it gets all messy and disorganized drives me nuts!
Stacie says
I would love a dedicated workspace, but I don’t have one. I work from the living room couch. For me, the most important factor is comfort. I have chronic pain so staying comfortable while I work allows me to be more productive at my job!
Ashley Sears says
I think a workspace is really important to have, especially when it comes to keeping things organized.
Dawn says
Office space is so important. If I didn’t have an office, I think I would go crazy!
Kelly Hutchinson says
I do not have a dedicated work space and I sorely need one. I get interrupted all the time.
Marcie W. says
I spent years working from the bar area in our kitchen before making a small workspace in our bedroom. Such a great decision! It is free from excess noise and allows me to devote myself to getting stuff done.
Maureen says
I totally agree with you on needing a workspace that is just for you. It is so much easier to get things done and organized when you have a space all to yourself.

A dedicated workspace is a must have!!! I love working from home but it is so easy to get distracted by dishes or dirty floors when you are stupid!!
Amber Edwards says
I used to have a designated work room! And now that I have a baby coming, I had to give it up for the new baby’s nursery. I have to rearrange a lot of rooms so that i can find a new corner to claim as my dedicated work space.
Liz Mays says
These are some great points. I had to move my office into its own room. It used to be in the living room and I’d just get too distracted.
Shauna says
It drives me nuts when I am sitting here working and the kids come in and chase the dog all around me. It is like, they don’t even notice that I am WORKING… lol

I have a dedicated workspace but I share it with our homeschool room. I am much more productive at the desk than on the living room couch with my laptop.

I actually just set up my own little corner office in the living room… Staples chair and all! Lol. I got a desk and now I feel much more productive when I sit down to work. My kids are still around me, but at least all my stuff is in one place. Totally agree that a dedicated workspace is important.
