Storing Apples and Slow Cooker Apple Sauce

If you go for apple picking, you probably use them for more than just snacking. How about baking and preserving? However, even if you don’t grow apples or make a special orchard visit, you can still stock up on apple for the long winter ahead (because some kinds of apple handle storage quite well) or making the easiest apple sauce ever. Here is what you need to know about long term apple storage:

  1. Chose Late-ripening varieties like Cameo, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Goldrush, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Ida Red, Mcintosh, Red Delicious or Rome
  2. Look through the apples and only keep the perfect ones (without cuts or bruises) for long term storage.
  3. Separate apple by size – small, medium, and big – eat smaller ones first.
  4. Put apples in boxes lined with perforated plastic for proper air circulation.
  5. Store in a cool basement or garage. The ideal storage temperature is 30-32°F with 90% humidity. If needed, cover apples with blankets to avoid freeze damage. Temperatures above 40° will make apples ripen quick, so do your best at keeping your apples safe.

And here is my favorite slow cooker recipe for apple sauce 10 medium to large apples, cored and roughly chopped 1 cup water 1 cinnamon stick ground cinnamon, for finishing.

Place the chopped apples, water, and cinnamon stick in the bowl of a slow cooker. Cook on low, covered, for 4-5 hours, until the apples are soft.

Remove the cinnamon sticks, stir mixture with a wooden spoon, transfer the apples to a food processor, mix until smooth. Add ground cinnamon to taste.

I can an apple, plum, pear sauce that is just delicious. I don’t use my slow cooker as much as I should. The goats love the peels and cores.

Applesauce is one thing I’ve never tried making on my own. Need to find a good source for apples each year so I can try it!
