Fat Bikes VS. Mountain Bikes: What’s The Difference?

Everyone’s familiar with the mountain bike. Mountain bikes are one of the most popular bike forms, especially for serious cyclists. They have proven time and time again to be powerful, durable bikes with the ability to handle tough mountain conditions or even just unusually bumpy/rock-filled trails. With a mountain bike you’ll never have to worry about being thrown off from a pot hole or foreign object in your path. However, mountain bikes aren’t the only bikes made to withstand tough conditions and rocky trails. Another bike that is starting to make waves is the fat bike.

Fatbike wikipedia

Fat bikes, like mountain bikes, are great for mountains, dirt trails, and other tough outdoor trails. However, they are also the perfect bike for riding through snow and sand. You won’t have to retire your bike for the winter with these bikes. Of course, now that winter is over that shouldn’t be too much of a problem anyway. However, you’ll be able to enjoy your fat bike throughout the summer by travelling to the beach or any kind of sandy, desert area. The oversized tires make these bikes are also great for riding through mounds of sand!

Not a beach person? Perhaps you’d rather enjoy a bigger adventure… maybe something along the lines of bikepacking? Bikepacking is just like backpacking only more fun because you get to bring a bike! Check out the infographic below for information on bikepacking with a fat bike including the best destinations, trails, and what you need to bring to make your bikepacking trip a guaranteed success!

I’ve never heard of a fat bike before. It looks a lot like what we used to call bmx bikes around here, I wonder if they’re the same or similar.

There are so many different kinds of bikes available these days. I’ve never heard of a fat bike before either, but bikepacking sounds like fun!

My hubby has four different bikes for all the places he rides. I suspect he has one of these ’cause he goes up in the mountains.

I’ve seen a guy riding a fat bike around our town. They look huge! Considering he’s riding on pavement, it must be overkill.

I’ve never heard of a fat-bike, but I’ve seen them before. These are great for bikers who have lots of trail options or ‘seasons’ (I’m not sure what those are, living in SoCal.)

I have never heard of a fat bike and was relieved it had nothing to do with it being for people of my size lol. Love learning about biking on your blog!
