Funny thing, A few years ago when we moved, I felt like we relocate our family back into late 70’s. The townhouse we got was hardly updated since it was built. I am talking ugly brown kitchen cabinets, outdated appliances, and no Internet or cable wiring at all. Everything screamed “CHANGE ME”, but as it usually works after the downpayment and closing costs – we had to go on rice and beans diet for a while (while planning the full remodeling of our family nest).
This thermostat on my wall irritated me every time I had to change something – from ignoring me completely to running the fan non-stop for no apparent reason. My husband suggested we looked into Nest once and once again. Finally, the old thermostat gave up and we were forced to make the change. Between another base model and a unit that would save us money in the long run, we wanted to go with the second:
This is the 3rd generation version of the Nest Learning Thermostat, which is thinner, sleeker in design, and allows for a bigger, crisper display than the prior 2nd generation version. When connected to home WIFI network a free app allows you to manage your home’s temp from a smartphone, tablet or laptop, even when you’re miles away.
With the winter around the corner, you can turn your heater up before you get home on a colder day or lower the temperature while you are away. I personally hate setting up a new piece of a appliance, but the Nest learning thermostat programs itself. It learns your habits and adjusts automatically, regulating your home’s temperature based on your schedule – which can save you energy and money. When you’re not at home (the “Away” mode), it will automatically switch to an energy-efficient temperature. In independent studies, the Nest saved an average of 10-12% on heating and 15% on cooling bills. It will also switch to heat and AC on its own.
I have also found out that some local energy companies (including ComEd) offer rebates if you buy this unit and our home security system works with it as well. Like a super smart appliance, this one offers individual money saving tips and notifies when you make a money-saving changes.
As I’ve mentioned before, our house is not wired for anything. It does have a phone line, but the last thing I wanted is an old fashion phone bill. With the router in the basement and WIFI on the first and the second floor, we soon discovered that the WIFI signal in different parts of the house gets spotty, which resulted in higher cell phone bill. As the number of Wi-Fi dependent products increase in a home, we have more than 7 “connected devices” using the signal (smartphones, tablets, laptops, computers, and Wi-Fi printers) the signal gets often thin. Add movie stream and smart appliances to the equation, and you have yourself a problem. Is there a solution?

For obvious reasons, the cable wasn’t in our budget so we started looking for cheaper alternatives. Hulu and Netflix seemed like great options, but how about live-time streaming? We’ve discovered that Sling TV works great with many play stations, ROKU, Apple TV. For only $20 you get live and on-demand TV from traditional channels such as ESPN, AMC, A&E, TNT, HGTV and more.
