Are you looking for the ways how to simplify your life? Yes, me too! I am tired of mess and endless need to clean and my first project is the kids room.
I have a full time job and a blogging business. I am a mom, a wife, a chef and a cleaning lady in my own house. Needless to say I do some jobs ummm… not very good. My cooking includes dozens of shortcuts and my other home chores constantly get pushed around into the dark corner of my to-do list. And the kids make more mess dragging toys and games all over the place. Here is what my kids’ room looked like at any given point: With a lack of storage space many things were on the floor and more things kept finding ways onto the floor with no plan of crawling back into the dark holes they came from. The closet over the years held wardrobe, puzzles, off-season clothes and now collects completely random things.
Operation: Kids Room
Goal: Create well organized and easy to maintain living space that kids can take of themselves
I have found a few different options, but most things were quite pricey. Even Wal-Mart solutions were not cheap enough. Finally, we decided to make a trip to IKEA kids. Great things about IKEA kids is that you can create a custom organizational solution without paying for customization. The space in our room allowed for three sections and we wanted to make sure and give a good variety of bins to accommodate projects for both kids. Left section belongs to my son, the middle one is for my daughter and the right tower is for shared projects. To make sure everyone knows (including those that can’t read) where each bin goes, both the bin and the spot get the same label. Practically everything we had in the room went into these bins – soft toys, blocks, legos, personal stuff, train tracks, etc. It also gave us an opportunity to do some cleanup. The wardrobe closet still had extra shelves and we repurposed it into the library and puzzle storage. There is plenty of room still left for new stuff. Magically there is nothing on the floor – YAY! The room closet could still use some help, but with so many containers I have collected over the years I don’t expect any problems finding places to store kids clothes.
Testing New Kids Room
The usual cleanup now takes about 10 minutes. Everything goes into the bins and boxes. Both kids have a very clear understanding of their personal things and where they belong.

It looks fantastic. It’s so nice to have everything organized an in its place. I’ve never been in an IKEA. I’ve heard they are a lot of fun

What an improvement. I need to do this in my son’s room in particular. It is filled with his legos and models.

I love what you have done! I am a container guy myself, if you don’t open our closets you think I am the neatest guy! But the house looks more spacious that way.
thanks,
Mitch

Wow, what a difference! I love the idea to use matching stickers to help kids recall where the bins go!

Wow, great job! I love to have everything organized. I have to go through and do it every so often in my kids rooms as they don’t keep it that way for long. ugh

My daughter’s room is such a mess right now. She has more stuffed animals, toys and clothes than I have room for. Those stacking storage bins are such a great idea!

I love the idea of putting pictures on the bin and on the cabinets so the kids know where to put the bin. Great ideas. Thanks for sharing.
