The summer is here. School is done and over with. Sun! Beach! FREEDOM!!! And absolutely no homework!

Wait! I am the mom and way passed the school age. I actually don’t want my kids to go loose and fry their brain cells onthe sun all day long. OK, moms, gather up and let’s plan how to keep our kids busy during summer. The last thing we need for them is to get bored and get themselves in trouble, so let’s see if we can find a creative way to make sure children continue to learn over the summer. Thanks to Chicago Museum of Science and Industry we have scientific projects and challenges coming into our email every week. And guess what? The Summer Brain Games program is absolutely free. Oh, yes, it is! As a part of this program there is a weekly online kit that features a new experiment.Over the weekend we decided to give it a try with two different projects. Since my oldest one is almost 6, we had to rely on daddy to take the leading role in this project.

Project: Hydroponic Garden

My kids love to get messy, and if you have the same problem, you might understand why I don’t have plants in my house. However, this project showed me that with a certain level of creativity and ability to follow directions, we can create a mess free garden.

This project requires 2 cups (one smaller than the other. Starbucks or DQ might be an excellent source for these – different size and identical opening), a plant or seeds, a strip of T-shirt, a rope, marbles, cardboard pieces, scissors, and water.

 Project: Water Wall

For this project you would need three 20 oz  plastic bottles, 25 feet of clear aquarium airline flexible tubing, duct tape, scissors, and a board.

It runed out to be more work than we thought initially and I think we want to try it again next week.Summer Brain Games: DIY Water Wall #MSIsummerbrain #ad

Want to see more exciting DIY projects? Check out Summer Brain Games. The courses are offered in both in English and Spanish  and if you register for this fun program, you will get a voucher for free entrance to go to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.

The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry is offering a fun and free online science program called Summer Brain Games. The eight-week program lasts from June 17, 2013-August 12, 2013 and features a weekly experiment or science challenge that can easily be performed at home with kids of all ages.

Visit msichicago.org/summerbrain now to register for Summer Brain Games and download your free Summer Brain Games kit. As an added bonus, registering automatically gets you a pass to come to the Museum for free this summer.

I’ll bet the kids had fun with both projects.
When we lived in NJ my husband had a rather large hydroponic garden in our sunroom. He grew tomatoes, peppers and lettuce. It made for some curious comments wondering what we were growing.

I have been hearing a lot about the Brain Games, and I am planning to try some of these projects in August when the youngest is away from home. Educational activities really get kids enthusiastic when they’re hands on like this!

The hydroponic garden looks like great fun to make. I may have to try that myself!

Great ideas! I love the waterfall project. Would be fun to dye the water blue too.
