How to Get the Most Cash for Items You No Longer Need

Are you ready to clear away the clutter and make a little cash in the process? Many people don’t realize that when they hang onto clutter, they are also sitting on cash. There are many ways to get rid of the items you no longer need and score some dough in the process, plus, a few small tweaks could help you get more money for these items! Look below at how to get the most cash for the items you no longer need, and see how easy it can be to clear clutter while earning extra money at the same time!

  1. Consider selling in an auction format.
When selling name brand clothing, collectibles, or hard to find items, you might do well selling in an auction format. Head to eBay where for a small fee and commission you can sell your item to buyers all over the world. Since buyers will be bidding, your item has the chance to sell higher and score you more cash.
  2. Thoroughly clean and mend any clothing consignment items.
Are you trying to downsize your closets? When selling either children’s or adult clothing, be sure to clean and mend items well. Shops won’t take items that are dirty, missing buttons, or excessively wrinkled. Freshly launder all items you take in, and fix any small blemishes such as missing buttons or stains prior to selling.
  3. When consigning toys, add batteries and clean well.
One way to get the most cash for your kids toys is to always include batteries so you can show it works. You should also place any extra parts or accessories in a ziploc bag and staple it closed. This way, the buyer knows all the pieces are there and accounted for. This method can get you more cash when you consign the item, but is also worth trying if selling at a garage sale.
  4. When selling online, provide as many details and photos as possible.
Should you decide to sell on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace, remember that details are key. The more information you can add, the better! Add details such as measurements, the year made, the maker, any maker marks, etc. You can never add too many details! Also, add at least 5-7 pictures. Buyer feel more confident paying for an item when it includes a clear description and lots of photos.
  5. Don’t rule out antique shops!
Antique shops and vintage shops may be able to pay you more for vintage pieces than you would get at a yard sale. If you have old china, old toys, vintage clothing, old books, silver, or other old pieces, take them to a local antique shop and see if they are interested in purchasing them for resale. Clean them up well prior to going, and be sure to wrap them for safe travel.
  6. Price to negotiate.
Whether you are selling online or via a yard sale, you should be open to bargaining. When pricing an item, you may wish to price it a dollar or two higher than you wish so you have some room to bargain. This way you can give the buyer a deal but still get the price you had in mind.

Are you ready to downsize, liquidate, and clear away the clutter? Are you ready to get paid in the process? Be sure you consider these tips on how to get the most cash for items you no longer need and see how simple it can be to turn clutter in cash.
